PVC Profile

These days the most popular material for double-glazed window frames is PVC-u (Poly Vinyl Chloride Unplasticised). Its popularity is based on several factors and most notably the fact that is the cheapest material for frames. However, it also has excellent heat insulation properties and is very durable which makes it ideal for variable climates. It is not only excellent at repelling heat, but it is also effective at reducing noise and draughts. This help creates a comfortable peaceful environment in any room.

As mentioned above one of the primary benefits of The main selling point of PVC-u frames is the fact that it is a poor conductor of heat and therefore has ideal insulation properties for a window frame. Of course heat insulation is primary objective of double-glazing as the knock on effect is reduced heating and fuel bills. In this respect PVC-u frames have the advantage over aluminium and to a degree wooden frames. Also, PVC-u are economical, durable and easily maintained. This easy maintenance further adds to the economic benefits of PVC-u frames particularly over wooden frames, which require regular attention and maintenance. PVC-u frames are not prone to warping or discolouration. They do not need regular painting or protective coating. The only regular maintenance required is the oiling of hinges and locks.

The attributes of PVC-u windows are clear in that it is cheap, has excellent insulation properties and is easily maintained. However, there are two notable downsides to PVC-u frames. Firstly, it lacks the strength of aluminium and wooden frames. This means that the frames have to be strengthened with either aluminium or steel. Also, the frames are prone to expansion during hot weather. This means that the expansion gaps have to be provided. These gaps can provide weak points and targets for would be intruders. The second disadvantage is the look of PVC-u. Whilst there is an improvement in the finishes of plastic frames it is still no match for the real thing. As you are probably aware, plastic frames can completely spoil the look of some period properties.

PVC-u frames remain very popular and are the preferred solution in many cases. However, traditional buildings that need to maintain the classical look suit wooden frames much better and commercial or public properties that have strong security concerns will suit aluminium frames. However, for modern homes PVCu frames are still the most economical option for a comfortable and peaceful home.

PVCu or uPVC

To be absolutely correct it is PVC-U and neither of the above!

Lets start by telling you what these letters mean.

First of all though: Question: What is the difference between PVCu and uPVC? Answer: NONE.

All that happened is that in our country uPVC changed it's name to PVC-U in the late 1980's to fall in line with our European friends. It seems that they were all calling it call it PVC-U because European languages mostly place the noun (being PVC in this case) before the adjective (U).

There are great many very good window and door systems, and the fabricator (actual manufacturer) can usually make a window up in one of two ways. For inherent strength, how do you tell the best from the worst - well I couldn't name names could I, but there is one major difference which applies to virtually all makes, and it is easy for the layman to spot. All PVC-U windows and doors have the outer frame welded at the corners, whereas the Transoms (horizontal bars) and the Mullions (vertical bars) can be either 'mechanically jointed' (screwed together), or 'fully welded'.

This picture shows a front door with a 'mechanically' jointed middle rail, which has become detached on the right hand side from the lock stile, and the gap is nearly a quarter of an inch wide.

This can happen on windows as well - now you know to insist on FULLY welded!

Note: It costs the manufacturer a lot more money in labour to make 'fully welded' frames, and also pretty expensive additional machinery also has to be used, that is why some manufacturers shy away from making fully welded. I myself believe that fully welded frames are far superior to 'mechanical' screwed together frame joints.Reinforcement in PVC-U frames:PVC-U window and door frames should not bear weight, and they are usually reinforced by the fabricator in the right places, and as specified by the extruder, or systems supplier. Normally the fabricator will be advised by the computer program used, on what to reinforce, and the criteria is relative to the size and style of window, and with what openers it has. Note: All frames used for conservatories should always be fully reinforced. Either aluminium or galvanised steel profiles are slipped into normally the largest of the hollow chambers, but the metal itself does not go right to the corners, and is not even closely butted, let alone actually welded.
These pictures illustrate profile shapes, weather-proofing gaskets, and sealed unit make up of a typical high quality multi-chambered reinforced window system:

The best place you could go to next is: My personal 'must have' checklist for buying new windows.PVC-U profiles for the window industry are extruded mostly in (various shades of) white, and to a lesser extent, in brown and as such these profiles are ready to be cut up and be used to fabricate window and door frames. It follows therefore that the frames produced from these profiles would be either plain white, or plain brown.
Plain white frames are by far the most popular because of their generally accepted smart appearance, and they also happen to be the least expensive. Plain brown ( mostly a sort of chocolate, or a caramel colour) tend to have very little popularity because they not too aesthetically pleasing as they are.Finishes on white.White profile with a 'woodgrain' foil bonded on one side of the profile, to give a woodgrain outdoors and white indoors appearance, is quite popular and suited to many properties, but of course does cost more because of the additional process involved.Finishes on Brown (s).
The main finish to brown extruded profile is the 'woodgrain' foil bonded on both the outdoor and the indoor sides, to give a traditional solid wooden look, which is very convincing from a modest distance. The main wood grain look alike types available are that of a 'mahogany' colour on the dark 'chocolate' coloured extrusions, and a variety of 'cherry' and 'oak' looking finishes on the 'caramel' coloured extrusions.
Rosewood is set to be the next newcomer.

The illustrations above show that these have a texture, as well as a wood pattern.Colour coated windows and doors seem set to be the next fashion:Many colours compliant to the European 'RAL' standard set (blues, greens, yellows, reds, etc.,) are now available, and the finish is achieved by a patented process by a now well respected pioneering company called Kolorbond, and another with the similar name of Kolorplas. The quality reports are very good on appearance, maintenance and long life, although expect to pay quite a hefty premium. Also think about this: you may like canary yellow windows and may be prepared to pay for it, but if you want to sell, will your prospective buyers be as keen!

Nearly all PVC-U looks fabulous when it is new but although some would have you believe it is 'maintenance free' in the real world it needs a regular clean to keep it looking at it's best. Aged with dirt and grime from traffic, birds mess and other pollutants PVC-U can look very unattractive.Do: Try a car shampoo in warm water - just like cleaning the car!Don't: Steam clean, some manufacturers will declare their guarantee invalid if their PVC-U has been steam cleaned - be warned!
